| The Rawhide Kid debuted in a 16-issue series in March 1955 and carried on through 151 issues until going into haitus in 1979. The comic series was a freewheeling romp of energetic, almost slapstick action across cattle ranches, horse troughs, corrals, canyons and swinging chandeliers. Stringently moral, the Kid nevertheless showed a gleeful pride in his shooting and his acrobatic fight skills.
Reprised in a volume 2 miniseries in 2000 and 2002, he was then given a "wardrobe overhaul" in 2003 for Marvel's adult-themed MAX imprint and was revealed to be gay. This torrent contains: Volume 1: The original Atlas series and the ongoing Marvel series The 1985 limited series Volume 2: The 1985 limited series Volume 3: The 2003 controversial five-issue miniseries Rawhide Kid - "Slap Leather". With the character now "officially" gay a good portion of the dialogue was dedicated to innuendo to this effect. The writers of the series stated "We thought it would be interesting to play with the genre. Enigmatic cowboy rides into dusty little desert town victimized by desperadoes, saves the day, wins everyone's heart, then rides off into the sunset, looking better than any cowboy has a right to”. Volume 4: The 2010 sequel miniseries The Rawhide Kid: The Sensational Seven. This storyline finds the Kid and his posse (consisting of Kid Colt, Doc Holliday, Annie Oakley, Billy the Kid, Red Wolf and The Two-Gun Kid) tracking the villainous Cristo Pike after Pike and his gang kidnap Wyatt and Morgan Earp. |
